Starting School

So for some of you, your children have grown far too fast and have just found out which school they are due to start in September. Now for us parents this is a daunting prospect at the best of times but to throw HD into the mix, it just causes confusion.
So if your child is at nursery of pre-school please ask their key worker about setting up a transition meeting with their new school. Discussing HD with the school as early as possible will help when they start. I am more than happy to write letters and include information and if it will help I can come to a transition meeting to help the school understand why HD effects these kids the way it does.
I think a key to helping HD kids in school is routine. Starting a toilet routine, which should continue at school, sitting on the toilet 4 times a day.
10-15 minutes after breakfast
10-15 minutes after lunch
10-15 minutes after tea
Before bed
They should sit for minimum 5 minutes, maximum 10minutes. Reward for sitting on the toilet and extra rewards for having a poo.

Encourage bubble blowing and having fun pulling angry faces in a mirror as a way of helping kids to push when sitting on the toilet. Try to make sitting on the toilet fun as kids will think they are missing out.
The final tip is a good toilet seat is key. Try to find one that has steps so that kids can put there feet firmly on the step and feel more secure.

Well I hope these tips help.
